WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Unbeaten Mount Union raced to a 13-0 lead to start the game Wednesday and the Purple Raiders were never seriously challenged thereafter in a 72-50 non-conference women's basketball victory over Nazareth in the second day of the Waynesburg Invitational.
The loss was just the second of the season for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 6-2. Mt. Union, ranked 25th nationally by d3hoops.com, improved to 11-0 overall.
Nazareth didn't score until nearly six minutes had elapsed in the game as senior
Kylie Bartlett hit her first of two three-point baskets in the half. Her second came with 2:03 left in the half and sliced Mt. Union's lead to nine, 28-19, marking the last time in the game that the deficit was in single digits.
Mount Union led 35-21 at the break and then opened the second half with eight straight points to quickly erase any Nazareth comeback hopes.
Kori Wiedt scored 14 of her season-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Purple Raiders, who defeated Empire 8 foe Alfred 65-58 on Tuesday.
Nazareth was held to its lowest point total of the season with Bartlett claiming high-scoring honors with 10 points. Junior
Hillary Simon added eight points and junior
Mary Holland had eight rebounds.
Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference play this weekend as the Golden Flyers travel to Hartwick and Stevens for games at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
