Manchev, Platt earn E8 honors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's sophomore goalie Ryan Platt has been named Empire 8 Goalie of the Week, while freshman Alex Manchev has been named Player of the Week.

A native of Preston, England, Platt tallied his sixth shutout this season in a Conference game against RIT on Saturday. Platt had four saves to help the Golden Flyers to their 1-0 victory. This is the third time this season that Platt has been named Goalie of the Week.

Manchev, of Sophia, Bulgaria, scored the winning goal against RIT on Saturday. A forward, Manchev has a team-best seven goals.

With their win against RIT, Nazareth enters this weekend's Empire 8Ttournament with 10-4-2 overall record, including a 5-0-2 mark in the E8. The Golden Flyers will play St. John Fisher Friday at home at 2 p.m.

The Golden Flyers will host two-time defending champion Stevens, Sunday at 12 p.m. in the conference title game.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- For the first time ever, Nazareth is the top seed and host for the Empire 8 Conference men's soccer tournament, which gets underway Friday. The Golden Flyers, unbeaten in their last nine games (7-0-2) and 10-4-2 overall, hosts fourth-seeded St. John Fisher (9-6-1) at 2 p.m. at Golden Flyer Stadium.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior #Mohammed Ahamed# and freshman #Alex Manchev# each earned first-team honors Thursday with the announcement of the 2009 Empire 8 Conference all-star teams for men's soccer. Ahamed was selected to the first team for the third time, while Manchev also was recognized as the E8 Rookie of the Year. The teams were selected through voting by the league's head coaches.

Nazareth clinches top seed on Manchev's goal

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth freshman #Alex Manchev# scored the game-winning goal with 8:14 remaining in regulation to lead the visiting Golden Flyers to 1-0 victory over RIT in an Empire 8 conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon. The victory gives the Golden Flyers a total of 12 points in conference play, which clinches the top seed in the upcoming Empire 8 tournament.
