ITHACA, N.Y. -- Three singles players and one doubles tandem won first-round matches Friday at the New York State Women's Tennis Championships at Cornell University.
Senior
Jackeline Martinez stayed alive at first singles with a straight-set win over Elizqbeth Geer of St. Lawrence 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore
Abbey Goings and junior
Kelly Noble won matches at fourth and fifth singles respectively. Goings defeated Brockport's Katie Keller 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Noble defeated Jillian Dann of Rochester 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles, freshman
Christine Cary and freshman
Sherrita Wilkins advanced at third doubles with an 8-3 win over Samantha Griffith and Kristen Ryan of Union.
Wilkins also dropped a tough match at sixth singles, losing in a tiebreaker to RIT's Julie Burkett 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7. At third singles, senior
Elizabeth Way lost a three-setter to Katie Barlow of St. John Fisher 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
