Flyers come up empty at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. -- Nazareth dropped its final two tournament matches Saturday at the University of La Verne to come away from the two-day event without a victory. The Golden Flyers dropped three-set matches to ninth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater and Chapman University of California and returned home with an overall record of 18-10.

The Golden Flyers were plagued by poor hitting percentages all weekend. Against Whitewater, Nazareth managed 20 kills with 18 hitting errors in 75 attempts for a .027 percentage. Junior Kristi Custer had six kills. Whitewater, meanwhile, had 40 kills and a .274 percentage.

Nazareth was able to keep the ball in play longer against Chapman as senior Mallorie Clary had 19 digs and freshman Aubrey Cooke totaled 14. Senior Katelynn Reed had nine kills and represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team. Reed also surpassed 1,000 kills for her career. She ranks eighth all-time with 1,028.

Nazareth is off this week before returning to the court to host Rochester Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The third time was a charm for Ithaca Saturday in Empire 8 women's volleyball action. The third-seeded Bombers knocked off second-seeded Nazareth in four sets to advance to Saturday evening's title match against top-seeded Stevens. Scores were 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers' women's volleyball team will compete against third-seeded Ithaca in their first match of this weekend's Empire 8 Conference Tournament at Stevens. With their 25-12 overall record and 7-1 mark in the E8, Nazareth trumps Ithaca's record of 22-16 overall and 6-2 E8. The semifinal match will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Hoboken, N.J.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers downed Ithaca and Hartwick in their Empire 8 cross-over matches. Nazareth defeated Ithaca in four sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22), and Hartwick in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-11). #Ashlee Travis# tallied a career-high 11 kills against the Bombers, and  #Brittany Crocetti# had a team-high 26 assists and five service aces to lead the Golden Flyers against the Hawks.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers rallied to defeat RIT in its second match of the second Empire 8 women's volleyball cross-over weekend, which Nazareth is hosting. Freshman #Amy Johnson# had a team-high 13 kills against the Tigers while senior #Katelynn Reed# had a team-high 11 kills for the Golden Flyers in the match against Stevens.
