Ithaca upsets Nazareth, 2-1

ROCHESTER, NY - Visiting Ithaca College defeated Nazareth 2-1 to earn its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season in field hockey Saturday.  The Bombers stunned Nazareth by scoring the winning goal with just 1:06 left on the clock.  Nazareth falls to 6-6, 1-3 in the E8 while Ithaca improved to 3-8, 1-3 ending a seven-game losing streak.

The Golden Flyers out-shot Ithaca 24-9 and and had three shots go off the goal post, including a penalty stroke taken Kelly Flanagan (Fairport) with 14:19 left in the second half. 

The Bombers scored first 10:41 into the first half off a shot by Katherine Brown.  Nazareth tied the game 1-1 with 1:30 left in the half.  The goal was scored by Flanagan, who scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season (and 40th of her career) with junior Sara Heron (Auburn, NY)  assisting. 

The game-winning goal was scored by Ithaca's Key Fox off an assist from Amanda Rissmeyer during a penalty corner.  Fox was able to deflect the shot off her stick into the high left corner of the goal. 

Ithaca goalkeeper Chelsea Welsh made 17 saves to lead the Bombers in the win. Kelsey Evans (Penfield)  finished with six saves.  Ithaca had a slight 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Nazareth is on the road for the next three contests starting with St. Lawrence on Saturday, October 17.  The return home on October 31 to host Hartwick in their final home game of the season.

ROCHESTER, NY -- Hartwick defeated Nazareth field hockey 3-0 in the regular season finale for both teams.  The Golden Flyers finish their season 6-9, 1-5 in the Empire 8 while Hartwick improves to 11-6, 5-1 and will advance to the Empire 8 Tournament next weekend.

WASHINGTON, PA - Washington & Jefferson overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with three goals during a 17-minute span in the second half to go on and defeat Nazareth 3-2 in Empire 8 field hockey action on Saturday.  The Golden Flyers fall to 6-8, 1-4 in the Empire 8.  W&J improved to 7-6, 3-2 in the E8.
