Nazareth defeats Hartwick, 63-39

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Nazareth College women's basketball team defeated Hartwick, 63-39, Saturday to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8 Conference.  With the loss, the Hawks fell to 5-4, 1-1 in the conference.  The Golden Flyers pulled away from a slim 21-17 half-time lead with 13 players contributing to the score in the second half (14 players scored overall).

Both teams struggled to connect on their shots in the first half with Hartwick shooting just 17 percent from the field and Nazareth connecting on just 1-of-12 from behind the arc (8 percent).  The Hawks finished with an overall shooting percentage of 19 percent. 

Freshman Brittany Wilson (Fairport) led the Golden Flyers in scoring with 14 points including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.  Her 11 second half points helped Nazareth go on a 21-5 run to take a commanding 18 point lead with just under eight minutes remaining.  The Golden Flyers had its biggest lead of 26 with :26 seconds left in the game.  The Golden Flyers also dominated Hartwick on the boards out-rebounding them 63-39.

Hartwick did not have a single player score in double digits, but were led by Danee Harrison who finished with nine points and a team high six rebounds.  

Nazareth's freshman class had a good afternoon with Brittany Patenaude (Watertown) going 3-for-5 from the field for six points and a team high eight rebounds.  Classmates Brittany Tallchief (Silver Creek) and Amber Leonard (Greece Odyssey/Rochester) also had six points each to lead the Flyers in scoring.

The Golden Flyers continue conference play at Ithaca on Friday, January 9 for a 6 p.m. game.  They return home on January 13 for the opening round of the annual JP Morgan Chase Tournament.
