Nazareth splits two matches at Stevens

Petzoldt surpasses 1,000 career kills

HOBOKEN, N. J. -- Fifth-ranked Stevens defeated visiting eighth-ranked Nazareth in three sets by the scores of 30-20, 31-29, and 30-28 at the Stevens Invitational. Junior Brian Bunch led the Golden Flyers with a team-high 14 kills and also added eight digs. Senior Joe Petzoldt, who surpassed 1,000 career kills earlier in the day in Nazareth's victory over New York University, added nine kills against the Ducks.

With the victory against NYU and loss against Stevens, the Golden Flyers move to 3-2 overall. The Violets, ranked sixth nationally, dropped to 0-5 with the loss, and Stevens remained unbeaten at 5-0 with its victory over Nazareth.

Freshman Billy Gimello and sophomore Hans Schroeder added seven kills and six kills respectively. Senior Frank Leahy finished the match with 41 assists while senior Chris DeHority added 11 digs.

The Ducks were led by Joe Trinsey, who recorded 15 kills. Tomas Bochicchio and Andrew Cranford each added 11 kills while Derek Mulvey tallied a match-high 42 assists. Stefan Premdas finished with a team-high 11 digs.

Against NYU, Petzoldt tallied a team-high 17 kills to lead eighth-ranked Nazareth to a four-set victory (30-19, 26-30, 30-20, 30-19) over sixth-ranked New York University at the Stevens Invitational. Petzoldt, ranked second all-time in kills at Nazareth, came into the match against NYU with 993 career kills and now has 1,019 career kills after the matches against NYU and Stevens.

Schroeder and Gimello added 11 and 10 kills respectively for Nazareth while Leahy amassed a match-high 53 assists. Seniors Kelvin Rolle and Ryan Johnsen each finished with eight kills for the Golden Flyers. DeHority led the Nazareth defense with a team-high 11 digs.

NYU was led by Devin Zolnowski who had 23 kills and Ori Oren who had 31 assists. Jay Hayes also added 11 digs for the Violets.

The Golden Flyers host D'Youville Thursday, January 29th in their next match.
