Nazareth's rally falls short, 83-77

DeHimer leads Golden Flyers with 23 points

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Jeff DeHimer scored a team-high 23 points and added nine rebounds for the visiting Golden Flyers, but St. John Fisher held on for the 83-77 victory in a men's Empire 8 basketball game. Junior Corey McAdam finished with 19 points as he scored Nazareth's final five points.

The Golden Flyers trailed 45-36 at halftime as Ozell Franklin tallied 17 points in the first half for Fisher. Junior Corey McAdam only played eight minutes in the first half after he picked up his third foul when he was called for a controversial offensive charge.

Fisher opened the second half with a three-point basket to stretch its lead to 48-36. Nazareth then trailed by a game-high 13 points, 62-49, with 12:18 left before two free throws from senior Ryan McAdam made it an 11-point game. After a steal by McAdam, freshman Jason Corletta followed with a layup to cut the Golden Flyers deficit to 64-55. A layup by DeHimer made it a seven-point game with about 10:30 remaining.

Back-to-back baskets by Fisher gave the Cardinals another double-digit lead before Nazareth began another rally attempt.

Nazareth's Phil Scaffidi hit a three-pointer with 1:45 remaining to cut the Golden Flyers' deficit from 11 points to 78-70. Ryan McAdam brought the game to 78-72 with 1:16 remaining, but Nazareth was unable to cut the Cardinals' lead to under six points.

Ryan McAdam was Nazareth's third player in double-digits as he finished with 12 points and added nine rebounds. Corletta and fellow freshman Phil Scaffidi each added nine points for the Golden Flyers.

Franklin finished with 25 points to lead Fisher while Matt Newman and Brandon Witte tallied 15 points and 14 points respectively.

Nazareth hosts Alfred in another Empire 8 contest Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.
