Utica outscores Nazareth, 75-63

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Utica outscored Nazareth 46-35 in the second half Friday to break open a close game as the Pioneers defeated the Golden Flyers in an Empire 8 men's basketball game, 75-63.

The Golden Flyers fell to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the Empire 8. Utica improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Utica led 29-28 at halftime, then Nazareth's Ryan McAdam scored the first basket of the second half for the final lead that the Golden Flyers would have, 30-29. Utica then embarked on a 19-8 scoring run that ended with a dunk by senior Doug Herring to go up by 10, 48-38, with 13:22 left.

Nazareth closed to within seven, 50-43, following a pair of free throws by senior Jeff DeHimer with 10:58 left, but Herring answered with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws and the Pioneers' lead never left double digits thereafter.

Herring led all scorers with 21 points. He also had four assists and three steals. Partrick Goodman added 15 points with seven rebounds and James Patterson and Justin Smith contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.

Freshman Jason Corletta had career-bests in points (16) and rebounds (10) for Nazareth. Corey McAdam added 13 points, eight assists and eight rebounds and Ryan McAdam had 12 points.

Utica shot 30 for 63 from the field, including 12 of 21 from three-point range (57.1 percent). Nazareth, meanwhile, made just 26 of 69 shots and 4 of 21 from three-point range.

The Golden Flyers play again Saturday at St. John Fisher at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on local radio station WHTK-AM (1280) and availabel online at www.whtk.com.
