ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth built a double digit lead midway through the first half and were never seriously challenged thereafter as the third-seeded Golden Flyers defeated fourth-seeded Brockport, 58-42, in the third-place consolation game of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament for women's basketball.
The victory boosted Nazareth's overall record to 8-5 as the Golden Flyers captured two of three games in the annual tournament played at RIT's Clark Gymnasium.
Nazareth's defense was especially impressive Saturday as the Golden Flyers limited Brockport to a 22.6 percent shooting percentage overall (12 for 53). The Golden Eagles also went 0 for 13 from three-point range.
After the teams exchanged seven-point scoring runs to open the game, Nazareth went on a 21-1 scoring run over a nine-minute stretch to break the game open. Senior
Sally Wilcox fueled the scoring binge by scoring 12 of her team-high 14 points, including two three-pointers.
Nazareth's defense continued to excel as the Golden Flyers settled for a 32-15 lead at the break. Brockport made just two field goals in 22 first-half attempts and went 0 for 7 from three-point range.
Nazareth maintained its double digit lead in the second half, although Brockport closed to within 13, 45-32, on a jumper by Brenlyn Campbell with 7:23 left, capping a 6-0 scoring run. Nazareth answered with a three-pointer by sophomore
Mary Holland to stretch the Nazareth lead to 48-32 with 6:40 left.
Freshman
Ashley Gallagher added 11 points for Nazareth on 5 for 7 shooting. Senior
Lizzie Barlow had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Brockport's Campbell led all scorers with 16 points.
Wilcox represented Nazareth as a second-team all-tournament team selection. The Golden Flyers also were recipients of the Nick Urzetta Sportsmanship Award.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Friday with a home game against Utica at 6 p.m. The Golden Flyers also visit St. John Fisher next Saturday at 4 p.m.
