ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth men's basketball triumvirate of
Ryan McAdam,
Corey McAdam and
Jordan Major combined for 75 points Friday to lead the seventh-seeded Golden Flyers to a scintillating 80-74 victory over third-seeded Geneseo in the semifinals of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament played at RIT's Clark Gymnasium.
The victory enabled the sharp-shooting Golden Flyers to advance to the tournament final for the second year in a row. The Golden Flyers are 4-8 overall and will play fourth-seeded St. John Fisher (11-2) in Saturday's championship game at 8 p.m. Fisher knocked off top-seeded Rochester 71-66 in the other semifinal.
Ryan McAdam scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds;
Corey McAdam had 27 points and eight assists and Major added a career-high 20 points. The trio combined to shoot 24 for 35 from the field (68.5 percent), including 9 for 17 from three-point range. The Golden Flyers shot 25 for 45 overall (55.6 percent), including 9 for 20 from three-point range. Nazareth also made 21 of 23 free throws (91.3 percent).
Nazareth scored the final 13 points of the first half to take a 34-22 lead at the break. Major made all five of his field goal attempts in the first half, including three three-pointers for 14 points.
Corey McAdam had 13 of his points in the first 20 minutes.
Nazareth continued to shoot the ball well in the second half as they bolted to a 17-point lead, 47-30, in the first four minutes. Geneseo twice cut the deficit to three, 57-54 and 75-72, the second time coming with 32 second left.
Ryan McAdam hit two free throws,
Jeff DeHimer added another free throw (for his only point of the game) and
Corey McAdam hit two more free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the win.
Scott Morton led Geneseo with 23 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Stevens scored 16 points and Brandon Simpson had 14.
The victory means that Nazareth and St. John Fisher will meet in the tournament final for the first time since 1986. The Golden Flyers will be shooting for their sixth title overall with the last one coming in 2003. Nazareth also defeated Geneseo in last year's semifinal before losing to Rochester, 87-75, in the championship game.
