WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College hosted the first annual Ann S. Batchelder Golf Invitational on Sunday morning in a steady rain. Originally scheduled as a two-day affair, the rain-shortened event
took place at the par-72 Nehoiden Golf Course with Middlebury College taking the 2008 team title.
The Panthers took top honors by five strokes, compiling the day's best score of 335. Amherst took second place with a 340, while Nazareth finished sixth with 356 stroke total.
"It rained almost the entire round, and it was quite heavy at times," said Nazareth Coach
Marty Coddington. "I'm proud of how our team handled the adverse conditions. We only finished eight strokes out of third place against a very strong field."
Freshman
Melissa Ciociolo was Nazareth's top finisher, placing 12th individually with an 86. Close behind were juniors
Meaghan Hardy and
Ann Sessler with 87 and 89 respectively. Junior
Kate Holland (94) and sophomore
Michelle Van Slyke (97) also competed.
Individually, Vassar's Alex Bello took medalist honors, shooting an 18-hole total of 79. Her rounds of 41 and 38 gave her a two-stroke win over Wellesley's Kim Eaton and Flora Weeks of Middlebury who each carded a 79.
"Overall, I am pleased with the effort," Coddington said. "We're looking forward to our home tournament next weekend."
