ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Kaylee Benz scored two goals and added one assist Saturday and sophomore
Abbey Bentz had one goal and two assists as visiting Nazareth defeated Elmira in women's soccer, 5-1.
Nazareth improved to 2-0 in Empire 8 Conference action and 6-3 overall. The Soaring Eagles dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in conference games.
Nazareth played without its top three returning scorers from last season as seniors
Rachel Cushman and
Kelly Finn and sophomore
Erica Conte are all out with assorted injuries. Cushman and Finn could return as soon as Wednesday when Nazareth visits St. John Fisher. Conte, the E8 Rookie of the Year in 2007, will be out the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL.
Saturday's game was scoreless until the 53rd minute when Benz converted a pass from sophomore
Meghan Finn. The next two Nazareth goals came less than a minute apart, Bentz scored at 60:21 off an assist from Benz, who added her second goal of the at 61:09 with Bentz assisting.
A goal by Joan Boland put Elmira on the board in the 66th minute, but Nazareth answered with goals by freshmen
Jenny Garrison and
Chelsea Rinere.
Nazareth had a 22-9 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalie
Hillary Simon made three saves.
After Wednesday's 7 p.m. game at Fisher, Nazareth is home Saturday to host St. Lawrence in a non-conference game at 2 p.m.
