ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth won its first Empire 8 field hockey game of the season Saturday as the Golden Flyers scored twice in each half or a 4-0 victory over visiting Elmira. Nazareth improved to 3-4 overall, 1-1 in conference games. Elmira is 0-7 and 0-2.
Freshmen
Lindsey Wagner (Deposit, NY) opened up the scoring for the Golden Flyers with her first career goal with 13:54 left in the first half. Junior
Kelly Flanagan (Fairport, NY) scored her first goal of the afternoon beating Elmira's goalkeeper Jalene McCulloch to give the Golden Flyers a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Elmira held off Nazareth for most of the second half until Flanagan scored her second of the game with 5:22 left to make the score 3-0. Nazareth freshman
Elise Maryanopolis (Gloversville, NY) scored the final goal of the game off a pass from Flanagan just one minute later.
The Golden Flyers out-shot the Soaring Eagles 40-11and had a 11-6 advantage in penalty corners. McCulloch finished with 22 saves for Elmira while Nazareth's
Kelsey Evans (Penfield, NY) earned her second shutout of the season after making five saves. Elmira's best scoring opportunity came at 13:11 in the second half when they had three consecutive corners and shots but were unable to get the ball past Evans.
Nazareth continues its home stretch with a non-conference game against Brockport on Tuesday, September 20th at 7 p.m.
