ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Rachel Cushman scored three goals, including two in the second half, to help lead Nazareth to the 4-1 non-conference victory over visiting Brockport.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 3-2 overall. Brockport drops to 1-2-1 overall following the loss.
The Golden Flyers applied constant offensive pressure to the Golden Eagles throughout the first half. Cushman used Nazareth's offensive pressure to score her first goal at 37:25, when she headed a cross from sophomore
Kara Eaker into the left side of the net.
About five minutes into the second half, Cushman recorded her second goal after receiving a pass from senior
Kelly Finn. Brockport cut its deficit to 2-1 at 59:05 as Nicole Gibaud found the loose ball in front of the Golden Flyers' net and kicked it into the open goal. Although the Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure to Nazareth throughout the second half, the Golden Flyers were able to hold Brockport scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Cushman reclaimed Nazareth's two-goal lead with her third goal of the game with about 14 minutes to play. Sophomore
Meghan Finn fed Cushman with well-timed pass to record an assist on the goal.
The Golden Flyers sealed the victory in the 88th minute as sophomore
Abbey Bentz tallied her first goal of the season on a penalty kick. The penalty kick was set up by a perfect pass from
Kelly Finn, which left Bentz with a breakaway in front of the Brockport goal. Bentz, however, was taken down by the Golden Eagles' defender before she could take her shot.
Nazareth sophomore
Hillary Simon played the first half and made three saves to earn the victory. Junior
Polly Muehlenkamp played the second half and made two saves while allowing Brockport's lone goal. Liz Durfee made six saves for the Golden Eagles in the loss.
Nazareth controlled play throughout the first half and much of the second half. The Golden Flyers finished with a 23-14 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Nazareth opens its Empire 8 schedule in its next game, September 17th, against visiting Alfred.
