ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth captured five of six singles matches Saturday and went on to win decisively in women's tennis as the Golden Flyers defeated Empire 8 Conference rival Stevens, 7-2.
The match was the season opener for both teams. Nazareth plays again Sept. 10 at Ithaca. Stevens visits RIT Sunday at 11 a.m.
Senior
Rachel Leonard paced Nazareth in singles as she rallied to defeat Stevens' Whitney Bender in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Seniors
Danielle Carinci and
Jessica Faber as well as junior
Elizabeth Way each won at both singles and doubles.
Stevens earned a point at second singles when Allyson Kingman outlasted Nazareth's
Jackeline Martinez in a tiebreaker 7-6, 2-6, 12-10. Carinci, Faber and Way each won singles matches in straight sets, while
Kelly Noble used three sets to defeat Stevens' Morgan Scalzi at sixth singles, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
