Overtime goal drops Nazareth in opener

Golden Flyers meet Gallaudet Sunday at 11

BOXSCORE | CUMULATIVE STATS
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Hobart's Tyler Webster (Acton, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game less than four minutes into overtime Saturday to propel the 20th-ranked Statesmen to a 1-0 victory over Nazareth in the first men's soccer game of the season for both teams.

The game was played at RIT as part of the fifth annual Doug May Memorial Tournament. The Golden Flyers play again Sunday vs. Gallaudet at 11 a.m.

Although Hobart dominated the action by outshooting Nazareth 25-4, Nazareth's Raymond Touchstone (London, England) had the best scoring opportunity of regulation, but his diving header less than seven minutes into the game caromed off the crossbar.

Hobart turned up the pressure on the Golden Flyers with 12 shots in the first half and 12 more in the second, but Nazareth freshman goalie Ryan Platt (Preston, England) was equal to the challenge by making 10 saves.

The winning goal came after Hobart's third corner kick of the first overtime. Clancy Purcell crossed the ball from the corner and Webster redirected it past Platt to end the game.

Senior Pete Van Dellon (Webster, NY) made two saves to pick up the shutout for the Statesmen.
