CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Nazareth split its first two women's volleyball matches of the season Friday at the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by SUNY Cortland.

Nazareth swept Buffalo State in its season opener 25-13, 25-21, 25-13, then were beaten by New Paltz in three sets 25-17, 25-23, 25-21. With the second-place finish in their pool, the Golden Flyers will play Fredonia at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Against Buffalo State, senior outside hitter Laura Persico had seven kills, four digs and two blocks and junior Mallorie Clary amassed 28 assists in her first match as starting setter. The Golden Flyers are playing this weekend without starting setter Kate Zwickl, who is out with a hand injury.

Against New Paltz, Persico delivered 10 kills and Carra Vanderstyne added nine kills. Junior Natasha Villane and freshman Leah Farrell each had 10 digs.
