Alfred eliminates Nazareth, 11-3

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Second-seeded Alfred scored seven runs in the first three innings and the Golden Flyers were unable recover as the Saxons went on to the 11-3 victory in an Empire 8 Conference Tournament game. Nazareth lost to top-seeded Ithaca earlier Friday, so the Golden Flyers were eliminated after suffering their second loss of the Tournament.

The Golden Flyers, making their first appearance in the E8 tournament, fall to 18-20 overall with the loss. Alfred improves to 22-10 overall with the victory, and will play either St. John Fisher or Ithaca in its next Tournament contest.

Karen Folts brought in the Saxons' first runs in the top of the first as she hit a two-out single to center field to score Ashley Passaro and Jesika LeBarron. Although Alfred loaded the bases again, junior pitcher Christa Harris held Alfred to two runs as she struck out Brittnay Loucks to end the inning. The Saxons doubled their lead in the top of the second inning as Jordan Siefer and Holly Seidewand scored after Passaro hit a two-out single.

After allowing just two hits to the Golden Flyers through the first two innings, the Saxons tallied three more runs in the third inning. After Folts scored on a sacrifice fly to left field, Seidewand hit a two-out, two-run home run to put Alfred ahead 7-0.

Nazareth continued to fight through the fifth inning as the Golden Flyers put three runs on the board to cut its deficit to 7-3. Junior Lizzie Barlow began the inning by reaching on an error and scored on a double by sophomore Jennifer Linnan.

After Linnan stole third base, sophomore Kelley Horbal brought her in to score with a one-out single to center field. Freshman Katie Valerio then hit a single to advance Horbal to second base. Nazareth's next batter, sophomore Laura Finan, hit a single to left field to score Horbal from second base. With Valerio at third base and Finan at second, Alfred recorded two consecutive outs to prevent the Golden Flyers from scoring additional runs.

The Saxons recorded all four of their runs in the top of the sixth inning again with two outs. After Alfred scored two runs on a double by Folts, Lauren Peterson hit a two-run home run to give the Saxons an 11-3 advantage. Alfred recorded three outs without allowing a Nazareth base runner in the bottom half of the inning to record the victory.

Harris pitched two innings for Nazareth and struck out one batter while allowing three earned runs and four hits. Sophomore Lisa Nazarenko pitched four innings for the Golden Flyers and struck out three batters. Nazarenko allowed three earned runs and seven hits.
