2008 AVCA ALL-AMERICANSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Frank Leahy, a junior setter, and Tom Maving, a senior outside hitter, have each been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) Division III All-American team. Leahy and Maving were each second-team All-American selections as they helped Nazareth to a 28-7 record.
The selections were made by the AVCA Division III Men's volleyball All-America Committee, which includes chairman Charlie Sullivan (Springfield), Tim Byram (Endicott), Jonah Carson (University of California, Santa Cruz), Patrick Dorywalski (Stevens Institute of Technology), and Keith Koch (Medaille).
Leahy, of Smithtown N.Y. and a graduate of Smithtown High School, finished the 2008 season ranked first on the team in assists with 1,304 (11.54 per game), which surpassed his previous team record of 1,094 assists in an individual season. Leahy now has 3,356 assists as the Golden Flyers' all-time assist leader. In addition to assists, Leahy is also among the team leaders in several other statistical categories. Leahy ranked second on the team in service aces with 26 while finishing fourth in blocks and digs. He tallied 64 blocks and added 150 digs. Leahy earned National Player of the Week honors for the seven-day period that ended February 10th.
Maving, of Tonawanda, N.Y. and a graduate of Canisius High School, finished the 2008 season first on the team in kills with 348 (3.25 kills per game) and recorded a .311 hitting percentage. Maving's 348 kills rank second on Nazareth's all-time single-season record. He tallied 369 kills during the 2007 season. Needless to say, Maving is Nazareth's all-time kills leader as he tallied 1,306 total kills in his collegiate career. Additionally, Maving ranked third on the Golden Flyers in digs with 163 (1.52 per game). Maving earned National Player of the Week honors for the seven-day period that ended January 27th, and was also honored as a second-team all-American following the 2007 season.
Leahy and Maving were also honored as members of the NECVA Western Division first-team in March.
