ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth seniors Shannon Burns and Terrance Nichols are the 2008 recipients of the Bill Carey Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes athletic achievement as well as fair play.

Burns, of Albany, N.Y. and a graduate of Colonie High School, is a four-year member of the women's soccer team. Burns appeared in 12 games during the 2007 season and tallied two goals and one assist in her only season as a midfielder for the Golden Flyers. Burns spent her previous three seasons as one of Nazareth's goalkeepers. During the 2006 season, Burns started all 21 of Nazareth's games in goal and made 96 saves for a 0.91 goals-against average. Burns helped the Golden Flyers to at least a share of the Empire 8 Championship during the 2004, 2005, and 2006 seasons.

Nichols, of Syracuse, N.Y. and a graduate of Henninger High School, is a four-year member of the men's tennis team. Nichols recorded an 8-10 record at second singles, including a 4-3 mark in Empire 8 matches. Nichols also has an 8-10 record at first doubles with teammate Jon Weaver. Last season, Nichols recorded a 10-5 record at third singles, including a 5-0 record in conference matches. He earned all-conference honors as a sophomore and a junior.

The Sportsmanship Award is named for former Athletic Director Bill Carey, who retired in 1998 after 18 years at Nazareth.
