Nora Davis each scored three goals Wednesday to lead the host Golden Flyers over crosstown rival St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 women's lacrosse game, 10-7.
Nazareth improved their overall record to 5-2 and 3-0 in conference play. Fisher dropped to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.
Junior Katie Schneeberger opened the scoring with an unassisted goal to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Fisher's Courtney Clare responded about one minute later to even up the score 1-1. Davis and Cook then scored consecutive goals to put Nazareth up 3-1 with 22:06 left in the first half. Lauren Glavin brought the visiting Cardinals within one but Nazareth refused to surrender the lead.
The Golden Flyers scored five more goals in the remaining 17:28 of the first half to take an 8-4 lead to the break. Sophomore
Jennifer Young started Nazareth's scoring run with a free position shot. Davis, Cook, and freshman
Alyssa Mulheron each tallied one goal to stretch Nazareth's lead 7-3 with 6:31 left in the half. Fisher's Mary Stimson scored 14 seconds later to cut the Golden Flyers' lead to three goals. In the closing seconds of the first half, Cook connected with one second left to reclaim Nazareth's four goal lead.
Fisher opened the scoring in the second half when Trish Scudder scored on a free position shot that brought the Cardinals within three with 25:07 remaining. Davis then tallied her third goal of the night followed by an unassisted goal from sophomore
Alyssia Roberts that gave Nazareth a 10-5 advantage with 15:41 left in the game. The Cardinals scored two goals in the remaining 15 minutes to bring Fisher within three goals but Nazareth held its lead to the final buzzer.
Nazareth hosts Elmira on Saturday, March 5 in another Empire 8 conference game.
