Nora Davis scored consecutive goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to give the visiting Golden Flyers an early 2-0 lead, but 11th-ranked William Smith scored nine straight goals and eventually went on to the 9-4 non-conference victory.
Nazareth falls to 9-3 overall with the loss while the Herons remain unbeaten with the victory and improve to 11-0 overall.
Richardson scored on a free position shot just 6:26 into the game to give the Golden Flyers the 1-0 lead. Davis extended Nazareth's lead to 2-0 after scoring an unassisted goal with 20:49 to play in the first half.
After Nazareth's goals, William Smith answered quickly. Sarah Goodkind put the Herons' on the board with 15:53 left in the half, and Sarah Davidson tied the game just 47 seconds later with a free position goal. William Smith tallied its third goal in a span of 1:38 after Brittany Callaghan gave the Herons a 3-2 lead with another free position goal. William Smith recorded two more goals in the first half to take a 5-2 lead at halftime.
The Herons began the second half in the same fashion as they ended the first. Rachel Stahl connected on a free position shot just 48 seconds into the half and Cassie Findlay recorded consecutive goals to put William Smith ahead 8-2 with 25:10 to play. William Smith added another goal midway through the half to take its largest lead of the game, 9-2.
Davis recorded her second goal of the game after connecting on a free position opportunity with 10:49 remaining to cut Nazareth's deficit to 9-3. In the final minute, freshman
Michelle Cook added a goal after receiving a pass from Davis, which dropped the Herons' lead to five goals.
Junior goalie
Maria Fusco made nine saves and gave up William Smith's nine goals in 48:35 of playing time. Sophomore
Ann Sessler played the final 11:25 of the game and was credited with one save. Becky Josefiak made eight saves to earn the victory for the Herons.
William Smith had a 20-13 advantage in shots while Nazareth had a slight 9-7 edge in ground balls, and an 8-7 edge in draw controls.
The Golden Flyers close their Empire 8 regular season schedule Sunday when they travel to Utica for a 1 p.m. game.
