RIVIER MATCHBEVERLY, Mass. -- The sixth-ranked Golden Flyers won both of their matches Saturday at the March Mania Tournament hosted by Endicott College. Nazareth defeated Villa Julie in three games 30-24, 30-15, 30-27 in its first match then earned a tough five-game victory 30-27, 27-30, 17-30, 30-19, 15-13 over 12th-ranked Rivier.
In their first match against Villa Julie, junior
Frank Leahy led the Golden Flyers with 25 assists while
Kevin Kirchhoff added 22 assists. Senior
Adam DiCicco led Nazareth with 11 kills while fellow-seniors
Tom Maving and
Kellen Gambeski each added eight kills. Juniors
Joe Petzoldt and
Chris DeHority each tallied six digs.
Gambeski led Nazareth in its five-game match against Rivier as he recorded 18 kills, four digs, and four blocks. Gambeski was followed in kills by Maving with 16, Petzoldt with 12, and junior
Kelvin Rolle with 12. Leahy had 56 assists while DeHority recorded a team-high nine digs. Petzoldt and DiCicco each tallied four of Nazareth's 13 service aces.
Nazareth will face 14th-ranked MIT at 12 p.m. Sunday. If the Golden Flyers defeat MIT, they will face either St. Ambrose or Ramapo in the championship at 4 p.m. If Nazareth drops its first match Sunday, they will face the loser of the St. Ambrose/Ramapo match in the third-place match.
The Golden Flyers return to Nazareth Tuesday for their final home match of the season as they will take on 13th-ranked D'Youville at 7 p.m.
