ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers outscored the host Saxons 34-23 in the second half Tuesday to pull away from Alfred in an Empire 8 Conference women's basketball game as Nazareth won 66-53. Sophomore Rachel Pirozzolo led Nazareth's balanced scoring attack as she recorded a game-high 13 points. Junior Lizzie Barlow and sophomore Jamie Malloy added 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Golden Flyers improve to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in the Empire 8 with the victory. Alfred drops to 2-17 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

Nazareth began the second half with a 12-2 scoring run in the first 3:37 to take a 44-33 lead following a three-pointer from Malloy. Barlow and senior Ali Sharpe each connected on layups while Pirozzolo added a three-pointer during the scoring run to stretch the Golden Flyers' lead.

Alfred trimmed Nazareth's lead to seven points, 50-43 with about ten minutes left in the game. But the Golden Flyers responded by exploding for the next 14 points to take control with a 21-point lead, 64-43 with 4:16 left in the game. Barlow began the scoring run with two free throws. Her points were followed by a three-pointer from sophomore Kelly Dunne, a layup from Pirozzolo, and two layups from Sharpe. Pirozzolo and Dunne also combined for three free throws during the scoring run.

In addition to the points from Nazareth's top three scorers, Sharpe finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Dunne finished with seven points. Alysha Dias was Alfred's only player to score in double-digits as she had 12. Melanie Jackson and Danielle Cooper finished with eight and seven points respectively.

The Golden Flyers return to the Kidera Gymnasium for their final two home games of the season this weekend. Nazareth takes on Utica at 6 p.m. Friday and Hartwick at 2 p.m. Saturday (WHTK-AM 1280 / www.whtk.com).
