Nazareth's rally falls short against RIT

Golden Flyers drop first conference game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting RIT outscored Nazareth 15-2 in overtime Saturday to defeat the Golden Flyers 94-81 in a men's Empire 8 basketball game. Junior Corey McAdam scored a game-high 22 points for Nazareth and tallied four assists in addition to four steals. Sophomore Dominique Kendrick added 10 points and two steals for the Golden Flyers.

Following the loss, the Golden Flyers drop to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8. The Tigers improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

RIT had control in the first half as the Tigers surged to a 19-4 lead in the first 4:33 of the game and held its largest lead of the game at 35-16 with 7:59 left in the half. Nazareth was able to trim its halftime deficit to 39-30 by holding RIT scoreless through the final five minutes of the period. McAdam, freshman Jordan Major, and freshman Phil Scaffidi each tallied baskets for the Golden Flyers during the scoring run.

After the Tigers extended their lead to 51-36 with 17:15 left in the second half, Nazareth stormed back with a 10-minute 28-12 scoring run to claim its first lead of the game, 64-63. Senior Jeff DeHimer's layup capped the run and gave the Golden Flyers the lead. RIT claimed a 70-66 lead with 3:43 to play in regulation but free throws by Major and a layup by DeHimer tied the game for the third time.

Nazareth extended its lead to four points twice in the final 1:22 following a three-pointer by senior Ryan McAdam with 1:22 to play and a layup by Corey McAdam with 24 seconds remaining. The Tigers, however, cut their deficit to 77-76 following a three-point basket from Scott Young. Corey McAdam connected on two free throws to give the Golden Flyers a 79-76 lead with 15 seconds remaining, but Nate Korinchak tied the game with a three-pointer with about five seconds remaining.

In overtime, the Tigers took control again by connecting on consecutive baskets and adding free throws. Eleven of RIT's 15 points came from the free throw line while Nazareth's two points were on free throws by Scaffidi.

The Golden Flyers placed five players in double-digits. DeHimer followed Corey McAdam with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Ryan McAdam added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Major and Kendrick each tallied 10 points.

RIT's primary threat was Mark Carson, who tallied a team-high 21 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Young finished with 19 points while Adam Sweet finished with 15 points, and Korinchak finished with 15 points.

Nazareth hosts Oswego in a non-conference game December 13th in its next contest.
