STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's basketball team, playing for the first time in 15 days, began its second-semester schedule in disappointing fashion Sunday as the Golden Flyers lost to Trine University, 79-75, in the opening round of the Tournament of Heroes, hosted by the College of Staten Island.
Trine, of Angola, Ind., improved to 3-7 overall and will play in Monday's championship game at 7 p.m. Nazareth, now 1-5 overall, will play host Staten Island in the consolation game at 5 p.m.
St. Joseph's defeated Staten Island in the second game, 76-65.
For Nazareth, senior
Ryan McAdam equaled a career high with 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Junior
Corey McAdam added 15 points and seven assists. Nazareth, however, shot just 28 for 68 (41.2 percent) from the field, including 6 for 21 from three-point range. Trine shot the exact same percentage overall, but went 10 for 18 from long distance.
"We didn't play great," admitted Nazareth Coach Mike Daley. "We had a lot of open looks, but didn't shoot well."
The game was tied 34-34 at halftime, but Nazareth used an 11-3 run to open the second half (capped by
Jordan Major's three-pointer) to take an eight-point lead, 45-37. Trine then used a scoring of of its own, 22-9, to take a five-point lead, 59-54, with 7:30 left.
The Golden Flyers stayed close and briefly regained the lead, 68-67, on a basket by
Ryan McAdam with 3:17 left. Trine answered with a fastbreak basket from Deon Thompson to regain the lead for good less than 10 seconds later. Trine preserved the lead by making free throws down the stretch as Randall Harris and Lamar Jackson each went 4-for-4 from the stripe in the final 2:29.
Jeff DeHimer and Major each finished with nine points while DeHimer also grabbed 10 rebounds. Wes Weir led four Trine players in double figures with 15 points. Reid McNally added 14 points, Harris 11 and Jackson 10.
