Rochester, NY -- Visiting Geneseo defeated Nazareth field hockey 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon. The Knights scored two goals in the first half and played defensively in the second to hold on for the win. With the loss, Nazareth falls to 6-9 overall while Geneseo improves to 9-7.
The first goal of the game was scored by Geneseo's Stephanie Maisonet (Pine Bush) just 5:10 into the first half. The Knights struck again in the final minute of the first when Stephanie Honsinger (Baldwinsville) scored off a centering pass from Erin Zalewski (New Hartford) to make the score 2-0 at 34:12.
It wasn't until late in the second half when the Golden Flyers got on the board at 58:22 . Nazareth's
Elise Maryanopolis (Gloversville) had a break-away on the right side of the field after dodging a couple of defenders and was able to center a pass to
Kelly Flanagan (Fairport) who found the back of the goal. It was Flanagan's team leading 10th goal of the season.
Nazareth had several scoring opportunities out-shooting Geneseo 12-8 (including eight shots in the second half) with a 9-2 advantage on penalty corners. However, they were not able to convert before time expired. Emily O'Leary (Pittsford) recorded six saves in goal for the Blue Knights while
Kelsey Evans stopped three for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth finishes up its 2009 season this weekend with games at Hartwick and Union on Saturday and Sunday.
