ITHACA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's third doubles tandem of sophomore Kelly Noble and junior Elizabeth Way won a pair of matches Friday at the New York Division III Women's Tennis Championships to reach Saturday's semifinals. The Golden Flyers also had four singles players still competing as action resumed Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University.
Noble and Way defeated Rensselaer's Zosia Casterline and Andrea Dalton, 8-6, in a first-round match and then knocked off Skidmore's fourth-seeded duo of Stephanie Abrams and Ashley McEvory, 9-8 with an 8-6 tiebreaker. Next up is a Saturday morning match against Vassar's top-seeded tandem of Jennifer Beckerman and Alexandria Jacobson.
In singles action, senior Rachel Leonard won her first-round match at first singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Ithaca's Devra Reiman. Way and Noble advanced at fourth and sixth singles respectively. Way defeated Brockport's Ally Kozlowski 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-2. Noble eliminated Rensselaer's Casterline 6-2, 6-4. Senior Jessica Faber also advanced at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2 over St. John Fisher's Katie Catalano.
Leonard and first doubles partner Jackie Martinez won their first-round match, 8-3, over Union's Hallie Mabry and Brittany Miller before losing to Skidmore's second-seeded team of Laura Attley and Danika Robison, 8-2. At second doubles, Faber and senior Danielle Carinci dropped a first-round match to Melinda Beckmann and Jamie Bow of the University of Rochester, 8-3.
