Nazareth holds off Stevens, 2-1

Golden Flyers improve to 5-0 in the Empire 8

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Kelly Finn scored the first goal and assisted on the second Sunday as host Nazareth remained unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference action for women's soccer with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology.

The win was the second of the weekend for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 5-0 in the Empire 8 and 9-4 overall. Nazareth also blanked Hartwick, 3-0, Saturday. Stevens dropped to 9-3-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Sunday's game was scoreless until the 32nd minute when Finn crossed a pass to freshman Kaylee Benz, who converted for her fourth goal of the season. The score remained unchanged until the 78th minute when senior Rachel Cushman outraced a Stevens defender to a loose ball and crossed a pass to Finn, who completed the play for her fifth goal of the season and 25th of her career, tying her for 10th place on Nazareth's all-time list.

Stevens, which had a 14-10 advantage in shots, avoided the shutout when senior Salme Cook scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season with less than eight minutes left.

Nazareth goalkeeper Hillary Simon made six saves, while Stevens' Kaitlin McClymont had four saves.

Nazareth's next game is Thursday at William Smith at 4 p.m.
