PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored a goal in each half Wednesday as the Golden Flyers defeated Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher, 2-0, in women's soccer action at Growney Stadium.
The victory boosted Nazareth's overall record to 7-3, including a 3-0 mark in Empire 8 games. It was the Golden Flyers' 16th straight win over the Cardinals, who dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in conference games. Nazareth has won 19 of 22 meetings with Fisher overall. The game was delayed for 30 minutes in midway through the second half because of a lightning strike.
Nazareth got a break early in the game when Cardinals' goalie Ashley Martin misplayed a shot by
Jessica Jones that resulted in Jones' first career goal.
Ashley Clinton sent a pass up the left wing to Jones, whose shot from about 15 yards away slipped through Martin's hands and into the goal.
Fisher had a great chance to tie the score later in the half when Kelly Zeppetella broke past the Nazareth defense. Her shot got past Nazareth goalie
Hillary Simon, but stayed out of the goal after hitting the left goal post.
Clinton and Jones also teamed up for Nazareth's second goal in the 64th minute. Jones chipped a shot into the Fisher penalty area and Clinton headed the ball past Martin for her second goal of the season.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (17-9) and corner kicks (8-1) and Simon made five saves for her first shutout of the season.
Nazareth is back home Saturday for a non-conference game against St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
