STEVENS BOXSCORE |
MIT BOXSCORE |
CUMULATIVE STATSHOBOKEN, N.J. -- Senior
Kellen Gambeski produced 14 kills and three blocks to earn tournament MVP honors Sunday as Nazareth defeated host Stevens in men's volleyball for the second time in less than 24 hours to win the championship of the Stevens Invitational.
The Golden Flyers, ranked ninth nationally, won the championship match by scores of 31-29, 30-25, 25-30, 30-27 over the fifth-ranked Ducks to improve their record to 6-2 overall. The Golden Flyers also defeated seventh-ranked MIT in the semifinals by scores of 24-30, 30-25, 30-21, 30-26.
"It's pretty tough to beat a good team twice in that short period of time," said Nazareth coach
Cal Wickens. "The second win was huge, because if we had lost it would have negated the first win."
Gambeski also asserted himself in the MIT match as he totaled 10 kills and 10 blocks. Against Stevens, senior
Tom Maving had 24 kills and junior
Joe Petzoldt added 17. Junior libero
Chris DeHority also represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team by amassing 14 digs. Junior setter
Frank Leahy had 62 assists.
"It was pretty much back and forth the whole match," said Nazareth assistant coach
Kyle Salisbury. "Both teams were exhausted, so it was like two prize fighters going at it."
Nazareth and Stevens had little time to recover following Saturday's five-game match won by Nazareth that ended at 11:30 p.m. Semifinal matches began at 10 a.m. with Nazareth defeating MIT and Stevens defeating fourth-ranked Carthage to set up a rematch for the title.
In the MIT match, Maving combined 17 kills with eight digs and Petzoldt had 15 kills and seven digs. In addition to Gambeski's 10 blocks, junior
Ryan Johnsen had nine blocks and junior
Kelvin Rolle had six. Leahy had 45 assists.
