CUMULATIVE STATSBUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nazareth split its first two men's volleyball matches of the 2008 season Sunday as the Golden Flyers traveled to D'Youville to compete in the Nickel City Classic.
Nazareth defeated Mount Olive College of North Carolina in three games 30-27, 30-25, 30-19 and lost to D'Youville in a five-game non-conference match 30-21, 23-30, 25-30, 30-20, 15-13.
Junior
Joe Petzoldt had 10 kills and senior
Tom Maving had nine in the Mount Olive match, while junior setter
Frank Leahy had 31 assists and three service aces for the Golden Flyers, ranked seventh nationally in Division III.
Against D'Youville, Nazareth managed just a .141 hitting percentage as the host Spartans prevailed. Maving had 18 kills, senior
Kellen Gambeski had 12, Petzoldt 11 and freshman
Hans Schroeder had 10. Leahy contributed 42 assists and seven digs and junior libero
Chris DeHority had 12 digs.
Nazareth competes again Thursday at Mercyhurst at 7 p.m.
