CUMULATIVE STATSBUFFALO, N.Y. -- Host Medaille got the game-winning goal with nine minutes to play in regulation Wednesday to lift the third-seeded Mavericks to a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Nazareth in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Upstate Tournament.
The Mavericks improved to 17-2-2 overall and advanced to Saturday's semifinal match to play the winner of another quarterfinal match between Union and Utica. Nazareth finished the season 8-9-2 overall.
In a rematch of last year's epic NCAA Tournament game in which Nazareth escaped in penalty kicks, 16-15, Medaille prevailed as Josh Meier scored the game's only goal with nine minutes to play. Jacob Reisdorf and Brett Bridges picked up assists.
Medaille had a 32-10 edge in shots, but Nazareth had a couple of quality scoring chances before Medaille finally broke the scoreless tie. A shot by sophomore Phil Holmberg hit the goal post early in the first half and a second-half header by senior Chad Kies was kept out of the goal by a Medaille defender.
Sophomore goalie Trey Barresi (Lansing HS/Lansing, NY) made five saves for the Golden Flyers.
