ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting William Smith used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Nazareth 71-44 in a non-conference game Tuesday evening. Junior Lizzie Barlow recorded a game-high 14 points for the Golden Flyers in their first game of the season. With the victory, the Herons improved to 2-0.
Nazareth took an early 6-4 lead after a two-point jumper by sophomore Rachel Pirozzolo, but the Herons answered with a lay up from Stephanie Czajkowski and Erin Cunningham to take the lead 8-6. Sophomore Jamie Malloy connected on a lay up on the Golden Flyers' next possession to tie the game 8-8. William Smith then began to pull away as the Herons went on an 11-0 scoring run to take a 19-8 lead with 11:38 to play in the first half.
Nazareth cut the Herons' lead to 34-23 with 1:18 left in the first half after consecutive baskets by Malloy and Barlow. The Herons' Latasha Coney added a lay up in the closing seconds of the first half to give William Smith a 13-point halftime lead.
The Herons began the second half with a 9-3 scoring run to extend their lead to 45-26. William Smith then put the game away midway through the second half as the Herons went on a 14-3 scoring run in about eight minutes to claim a 68-37 lead with 2:29 left in the game. William Smith shot a torrid 58% (15-26) from the field in the second half to help separate themselves from Nazareth.
Latasha Coney led William Smith with 12 points, but the Herons received points from 11 other players, four of whom recorded at least eight points. In addition to Barlow, Nazareth was led by Malloy who recorded nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior Ali Sharpe, sophomore Kelly Dunne, and Pirozzolo each recorded six points for the Golden Flyers.
The Golden Flyers travel to Hilbert for a non-conference game Saturday for their next game. Nazareth's game against William Smith was Devin Gotham's first game as head coach of the Golden Flyers.
