CUMULATIVE STATSUTICA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth overcame a 30-minute lightning delay as well as SUNYIT Tuesday in men's soccer as the Golden Flyers used a late goal from sophomore Greg Blanchard (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls, NY) to take a 2-1 non-conference victory.
Nazareth improved to 5-6-2 overall with the victory. The Golden Flyers hosts Ithaca Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference game. SUNYIT is 3-10 overall.
Nazareth went ahead 1-0 on a first-half goal by Justin Stevens (Canisius HS/Derby, NY), who converted a crossing pass from Stephen Tychostup (Mayfield HS/Mayfield, NY).
After a bolt of lightning delayed the game for 30 minutes early in the second half, SUNYIT returned to the pitch and tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Brendon Thomas in the 74th minute.
Blanchard then untied the score with just under four minutes to play when he headed in a cross from Stevens.
SUNYIT had a 15-9 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks. Sophomore Trey Barresi (Lansing HS/Lansing, NY) played all 90 minutes in goal for Nazareth and had seven saves.
