CUMULATIVE STATSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The visiting Golden Flyers fell to Utica in an Empire 8 Conference game Sunday, 3-1. Sophomore Christopher Lofgren scored Nazareth's only goal of the game as he converted on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to tie the game 1-1.
Nazareth falls to 4-6-2 overall and dropped to 1-3 in the Empire 8 Conference while Utica improved to 8-3 overall and remained undefeated in the Conference with a 4-0 record.
The Pioneers scored the only goal of the first half to take the early lead. Nick Callahan converted a cross from Evan Dufault in the 17th minute to give Utica the 1-0 advantage.
After a foul in Utica's goalie box, Lofgren converted on the ensuing penalty kick for his second goal of the season and to tie the game 1-1 just three minutes into the second half.
Utica reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute as Dufault chased down a lose ball then beat Nazareth goalkeeper Trey Barresi on the left side. The Pioneers secured the victory in the 87th minute as Utica came down the field with a three on one breakaway. Dan Soderberg scored from about 15 yards away to put the Pioneers up 3-1.
After Utica scored its second goal, the Golden Flyers increased their pressure on the Pioneers to try to tie the game. However, Nazareth was forced to play with 10 men after freshman Mark Daly received his second yellow card of the game in the 73rd minute.
Baressi made 11 saves for Nazareth including eight in the second half to keep the Golden Flyers close. Utica's goalie Andrew Miller was forced to make five saves to earn the victory. The Pioneers held an advantage in shots (20-7) and corner kicks (7-3).
The Golden Flyers play their next game at SUNYIT Tuesday in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. before returning to Nazareth to host Ithaca Saturday in a key conference game at 1 p.m.
