CUMULATIVE STATSHOBOKEN, N.J. -- Host Stevens scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the second overtime period Saturday to defeat Nazareth in men's soccer, 2-1.
The goal, scored on a header by the Ducks' Terrance Johnson, enabled fourth-ranked Stevens to remain unbeaten overall at 10-0-2, including a 3-0 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. The loss dropped the Golden Flyers to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8.
After a scoreless first half, each team scored in the second to force overtime. Stevens got a goal from Al Lockhart in the 65th minute to go up 1-0, but Nazareth countered three minutes later as junior Jordan Pedersen (Homer HS/Homer, NY) scored his first career goal off an assist from junior Stephen Tychostup (Mayfield HS/Mayfield, NY).
Nazareth had a quality chance in the 77th minute, but a shot by sophomore Philip Holmberg deflected off the crossbar. The teams then played one 10-minute overtime without scoring, before Johnson converted in the 102nd minute as he headed in a pass from Sean Bliss, who also assisted on the Ducks' first goal.
Stevens outshot Nazareth 25-9 and had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Jared Schreiner (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake HS/Burnt Hills, NY) made his first career start in goal and made 12 saves.
Nazareth is back in action Sunday for another Empire 8 Conference match at Utica at 1 p.m.
