PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- It was a successful first day for the Nazareth women's volleyball team at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover hosted by St. John Fisher.
The Golden Flyers won two matches to boost their overall record to 10-2 and their E8 mark to 2-0. The Golden Flyers opened the day with a key four-game victory over Ithaca. Scores there were 30-24, 30-21, 22-30, 30-19. They followed that up with a three-game sweep of Alfred by scores of 30-20, 30-18, 30-25.
Action resumes Saturday with the Golden Flyers playing Elmira at 9:30 a.m. and Stevens at 12 p.m.
In the Ithaca match, junior Laura Persico (Ravena, NY) pounded out 20 kills and senior Elizabeth Tregan (Plattsburgh, NY) added 19 kills to pace a balanced offense.
Persico had six kills in the first game and eight more in the second as Nazareth built a 2-0 advantage. Tregan delivered five kills in game four to enable Nazareth to clinch the match.
Sophomore setter Kate Zwickl (Chester, NY) contributed 52 assists to go with 11 digs and sophomore Carra Vanderstyne (Victror, NY) had 12 kills and 12 digs.
Other strong numbers included 17 digs for sophomore libero Mallorie Clary (Baltimore, MD), 13 kills for sophomore Katelynn Reed (Horseheads, NY) and eight digs for sophomore Natasha Villane (Canandaigua, NY).
Against Alfred, freshman Kristi Custer (Truxton, NY) posted 10 kills and Villane had 16 digs. Sophomore Megan DeRitter (Fulton, NY) had eight kills and junior Christa Harris (Liverpool, NY) had seven. Sophomore Emily Payne (Farmington, NY) had six kills and Zwickl had 29 assists.
