ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kelly Dunne recorded a team-high 18 points for Nazareth, but the Golden Flyers were unable to sustain their lead as they fell 73-63 to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology in an Empire 8 Conference game. With the loss, the women's basketball team falls to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Stevens improves to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the Empire 8 with the victory.
Nazareth and Stevens began by trading baskets through the first six minutes of the game. The Ducks then went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-9 lead after Dora Enright connected on two free throws with 11:39 to play in the half.
The Golden Flyers answered with a 16-6 scoring run in the next six and a half minutes to take a 25-22 lead after a layup by junior Lizzie Barlow. Senior Ali Shapre began the run with a layup while junior Sally Wilcox and sophomore Rachel Pirozzolo each added two-point baskets. Freshman Mary Holland connected on three-pointer while Dunne added a three-pointer and two free throws to give Nazareth the advantage. After Dani Dudek tied the game for Stevens with 38 seconds left in the half, Dunne responded with a basket in the closing seconds to give Nazareth the 34-32 halftime lead.
The Golden Flyers extended their lead to five points early in the second half after Barlow connected on a two-point jumper and sophomore Jamie Malloy added a free throw. Stevens answered on its next possession with a basket from Paige Armstrong to cut Nazareth's lead to 37-34.
The Ducks continued their scoring run and took a six point lead at the 10:30 mark after Enright made a three-pointer. Sharpe connected on a free throw two minutes later to cut the Golden Flyers' deficit to 53-50, but Nazareth was unable to take the lead. Stevens made consecutive baskets and free throws in the final minutes to pull away.
In addition to Dunne's 18 points, Barlow and Wilcox each added 11 points while Sharpe contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Dudek recorded a game-high 20 points for the Ducks while Enright added 16 points, 12 of which came on free throws.
Nazareth plays again next week in the JP Morgan Chase Tournament, which begins Tuesday, January 8th.
