CUMULATIVE STATSUNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Host John Carroll University cruised to a 14-point halftime lead and never faltered Wednesday in an 82-57 women's basketball victory over Nazareth in a non-conference game.
The Golden Flyers, playing for the first time since Dec. 7, dropped to 2-6 overall. The Blue Streaks are 5-5. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's basketball.
Nazareth scored the game's first basket on a short jumper by sophomore Jamie Malloy, but it was all John Carroll thereafter. Two baskets by Caitlin Sureck and one by Lianna Jennings put the Blue Streaks ahead to stay as the lead extended into double digits with five minutes left in the half.
Sureck and Jennings each had six points in the first half as did Lana Kiko as John Carroll was comfortably ahead, 38-24, at the break. The game never got close in the second half as John Carroll's lead swelled to as many as 31 points with less than seven minutes to play.
Malloy was Nazareth's high scorer with a season-high 17 points, which included one three-pointer and 8 of 10 free throws. Senior Ali Sharpe had eight and junior Lizzie Barlow had a team-best seven rebounds. Jennings had 13 points for John Carroll and Sureck combined 12 points with eight rebounds.
