Nazareth rallies past Hartwick, 10-8

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth outscored visiting Hartwick 6-1 in the fourth quarter Saturday to rally past the Hawks for a 10-8 men's lacrosse victory in a key Empire 8 Conference game.

The fourth-quarter flurry enabled the ninth-ranked Golden Flyers to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference games. It was Nazareth's 20th win over Hartwick in 21 meetings. Hartwick is 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8.

Trailing 7-4 after three quarters, Nazareth needed less than three minutes to tie the score. Senior midfielder Aaron Civalier (Penfield HS/Rochester, NY) scored just 27 seconds into the period and senior Steve Cutia (Cortland HS/Cortland, NY) added an unassisted goal just 41 seconds after that.

Then, after the Golden Flyers cleared the the ball following a Hartwick turnover, senior midfielder Mark Kanellis (Cortland HS/Cortland, NY) raced down the field and scored the tying goal just over the minute later.

Senior midfielder Matt Aloi (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville, NY) followed with a pair of goals to put Nazareth on top to stay. He scored the go-ahead goal off a pass from Corey Remoli (Voorhees HS/Asbury, N.J.) with 9:33 left and then scored again less than a minute later off a pass from Civalier.

Hartwick's Matt Shellard )Shaker HS/Latham, NY) broke Nazareth's scoring string with his second goal of the game off an assist from Mike Robustello (Southside/Rockville Centre, NY) with 5:46 left. Nazareth, however, was able to control the ball the rest of the way. The Golden Flyers added an insurance goal with 2:39 left as Remoli netted his second goal of the game off an assist from freshman attackman Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (Orchard Park HS/Orchard Park, NY).

Hartwick looked to be in control for the first three quarters as freshman Vito DeMola (Sachem East HS/Holtsville, NY) scored four goals, boosting his season total to 25, as the Hawks raced to a 7-4 advantage.

Hartwick was up 3-1 early in the second quarter following an unassisted goal by Steve Caramello (Duxbury HS/Duxbury, MA). Nazareth followed with three straight goals -- two by Civalier and one by Remoli -- to go up 4-3. Hartwick then closed out the half with three straight goals -- two by DeMola and one by Shellard off an assist from goalie John Meade (Islip HS/Ocean Beach, NY) -- to take a 6-4 lead into the break. DeMola scored the only goal of the third quarter to make it 7-4.

Nazareth had advantages in shots (39-29) and ground balls (43-35) and the Golden Flyers won 15 of 22 face-offs with junior Chris Law (Catonsville HS/Catonsville, MD) taking 12 of 16 draws. Nazareth senior Anthony Desimone (Immaculate Heart Central/Clayton, NY) made his first career start in goal for Nazareth and made seven saves. Meade had 10 saves for the Hawks. Sophomore long-stick Kyle Brown (Catonsville HS/Baltimore, MD) had eight ground balls.

Nazareth plays its next two games on the road -- Wednesday at Cortland for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at Ithaca at 1 p.m.
