CUMULATIVE STATSVERO BEACH, Fla. -- Sophomore attackman Erinn O'Hara had four goals and one assist and Aaron Civalier and Corey Remoli each scored three times Thursday as Nazareth defeated its second top 10 opponent in three days as the Golden Flyers scored a 15-10 win over Western New England in men's lacrosse.
The game was played at Vero Beach High School and boosted 17th-ranked Nazareth's overall record to 4-1. Western New England, ranked seventh nationally, is 2-2 overall. Nazareth also defeated eighth-ranked Wesleyan, 8-5, on Tuesday.
Nazareth led 3-2 after the first quarter and extended that advantage to 7-4 at halftime. Four straight goals to open the third quarter allowed the lead to swell to 11-4, before Western New England scored the last four goals of the quarter to close to within 11-8.
O'Hara scored a man-up goal early in the fourth quarter to swing the momentum back in Nazareth's direction and senior Matt Aloi added another goal less than a minute later. After Joe O'Keefe scored for Western New England, Nazareth answered with goals from Civalier and O'Hara to increase the lead to 15-9. Jon Hayes closed out the scoring with a man-down goal with 2:28 to play.
WNEC's Mike Kelly scored two of the game's first three goals to give the Golden Bears an early lead, but Nazareth countered with goals from Civalier, Aloi and Steve Cutia to take the lead for good at 4-2.
Another goal by Kelly enabled WNEC to stay close in the second quarter, but Nazareth opened a 7-3 advantage on two goals from O'Hara and one from Remoli, who scored off a man-up pass from Civalier.
In the third quarter, Nazareth broke it open with four straight goals. Brian Lissner scored his first goal of the season in transition off a pass from longstick Kyle Brown. Remoli added two more goals and junior middie Mike Cummings also contributed a goal.
Nazareth had a 50-36 edge in shots and a 44-35 advantage in ground balls. Freshman Brian Orr had eight ground balls and Civalier had five. WNEC won 16 of 27 face-offs, but freshman R.J. Gringeri emerged for Nazareth in the second half to take 9 of 14. Nazareth goalie Todd Dermody made 11 saves while Chris Body made 19 saves for Western New England.
Nazareth's next game is Wednesday at Utica for an Empire 8 Conference matchup at 4 p.m.
