CUMULATIVE STATSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Jodee Magistro scored two goals including the game-winner to help lift Nazareth to a 3-2 non-conference victory over visiting Geneseo in overtime. The Golden Flyers begin the season with a 1-0 record with the victory while the Blue Knights fall to 0-2.
Geneseo took a 2-0 lead in the first half as Erin Zalewski scored after a penalty corner. About 14 minutes later, it was followed by an unassisted goal from Michelle Milkovich who scored on a rebound.
Nazareth cut its deficit to 2-1 as Magistro scored her first goal of the game. Magistro found the rebound on the right side of the goal and put it past Geneseo's goalie, Stacy Hennick, before she could recover. The Golden Flyers struck again with just under eight minutes to play to tie the game 2-2. Freshman Sara Heron advanced the ball to senior Marissa Rys who put a shot through traffic into the net.
The Golden Flyers controlled most of the sudden victory period as they continued to pressure the Blue Knights. Sophomore Kelly Flanagan took a pass from around midfield and sprinted down the left side of the field to start a 2-on-1 breakaway. As she cut toward the goal she passed the ball to Magistro who was left unmarked. Magistro made one fake then moved to the right of Geneseo's new goalie, Emily O'Leary, and put the ball into the open net to score the game-winner.
Nazareth had a 14-8 advantage in shots but Geneseo countered that with a 8-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
The Golden Flyers travel to St. Lawrence for a non-conference game Saturday, September 8th for their next game.
