ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers used two first half goals to defeat visiting Houghton 2-0 in a non-conference game. Senior Kelly Miranda (Ossining HS/Ossining, NY) scored Nazareth's first goal then assisted on sophomore Kelly Flanagan's (Fairport HS/ Fairport, NY) goal later in the half.

Nazareth improves to 4-2 with the victory while Houghton falls to 2-6.

The Golden Flyers' first goal came during a scramble in front of Houghton's net as Miranda found the loose ball and put it past the Highlanders' defenders just 4:06 into the game. Nazareth made it a two-goal game about 10 minutes later after Miranda dodged past a defender and began a fast-break. She found Flanagan open on the left side of the net, who easily beat the goalkeeper.

Junior Katie May (Irondequoit HS/Rochester, NY) started the game in goal for Nazareth and earned the victory. She made two saves while freshman Kelsey Evans (Penfield HS/Penfield, NY) made three saves to keep Houghton scoreless. Ashley Farr made five saves for the Highlanders, including four in the first half.

The Golden Flyers held a slight advantage in shots (15-12) as well as penalty corners (8-6).

Nazareth travels to Brockport for a non-conference game September 25th before returning home to face Hartwick in a conference game on the 29th.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's 2007 field hockey team, which won the Empire 8 Conference championship last fall, also gained recognition for its performance in the classroom as several players were named to the ZAG/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. In addition, the Golden Flyers were recognized as one of a handful of schools with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.
