LATROBE, Pa. -- Visiting Nazareth won in field hockey for the second time this weekend as the Golden Flyers received a second-half goal from junior Kristen McIntyre in a 1-0 win over St. Vincent.

Nazareth also defeated Washington& Jefferson, 4-2, Saturday in the Golden Flyers' Empire 8 Conference opener and now stands at 3-2 overall. St. Vincent fell to 0-7.

Nazareth dominated the action with a 24-3 advantage in shots, but the Golden Flyers were kept off the scoreboard until 10:17 remained and McIntyre delivered her first goal of the season off an assist from senior Kelly Miranda.

The win was preserved by junior goalie Katie May (Irondequoit HS/Rochester, NY), who produced three saves in recording her first career shutout.

Nazareth is home Thursday for a non-conference game against Houghton at 7 p.m.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's 2007 field hockey team, which won the Empire 8 Conference championship last fall, also gained recognition for its performance in the classroom as several players were named to the ZAG/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. In addition, the Golden Flyers were recognized as one of a handful of schools with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

In voting conducted among the league's seven head coaches, Miranda was also named to the first team along with senior defender Megan Grimmer. Two other Nazareth players, sophomore forward Kelly Flanagan and junior midfielder Julie Paska, were named to the second team.
