CUMULATIVE STATSWASHINGTON, Pa -- Senior Kelly Miranda scored once in each half to help lift the visiting Golden Flyers to a 4-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson in their first conference game of the season. Nazareth improves to 2-2 overall while the Presidents fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.
Senior Jodee Magistro set up Miranda's first goal, which came just over three and a half minutes into the game. Washington and Jefferson was able to tie the score 1-1 in the 33rd minute after Amanda Howard scored following a penalty corner.
Nazareth took control early in the second half as the Golden Flyers scored three consecutive goals to give them a 4-1 advantage. Magistro recorded her second assist of the game by setting up senior Keri Ross after a penalty corner in the 46th minute. Miranda also converted a penalty corner to extend the Golden Flyers' lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute. Freshman Sara Heron was credited with the assist on Miranda's second goal.
Sophomore Anna Wing set up sophomore Kelly Flanagan for Nazareth's final goal to give the Golden Flyers the 4-1 lead with just under 12 minutes to play. Washington and Jefferson scored in the final seconds of the game to cut the final deficit to 4-2.
The Presidents outshot the Golden Flyers 13-7 over the course of the game. Junior Katie May made five saves for Nazareth including four in the second half for her second victory of the season. Ashley Rund made two saves for Washington and Jefferson. Each team had nine penalty corner opportunities.
Nazareth plays against St. Vincent Sunday in a non-conference match before returning home for a non-conference match against Houghton Thursday.
