CUMULATIVE STATSMORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Nazareth scored seven straight goals Wednesday to dominate play in a non-conference field hockey game at Morrisville State. The Golden Flyers left with their sixth win of the season as they held on for a 7-2 win.
Nazareth, at 6-3 overall, has already exceeded its total number of wins for 2006, when the Golden Flyers went 5-12. Morrisville is 2-7. The seven goals are the most for a Nazareth field hockey team since 1999 when the Golden Flyers defeated Kenyon 7-0.
Senior Jodee Magistro (Comsewogue HS/Port Jefferson Station, NY) scored three goals and sophomore Kelly Flanagan (Fairport HS/Fairport, NY) scored twice. Senior Kelly Miranda (Ossining HS/Ossining, NY) set a school record with three assists.
Magistro's first goal came less than six minutes into the game following a scramble in front of the Morrisville goal. Less than four minutes after that, senior Keri Ross scored off an assist from Miranda to give Nazareth a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Magistro's second goal came on a penalty stroke early in the second half after the Morrisville goalie covered the ball with her hand. Less than three minutes later, she scored for the third time with Miranda picking up her second assist.
Flanagan added her two goals to increase her team-leading total to eight. Junior Julie Paska scored Nazareth's seventh goal with about five minutes left off an assist from Megan Grimmer. Miranda became the first Nazareth player to record three assists in one game. The previous record of two assists had been achieved 18 times, most recently by Danielle Gregory in 2005.
Katie May played the first half in goal and made two saves for Nazareth. Stacy Kingsley and Kelsey Evans split time in the second half.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Sunday at home against Stevens at 1 p.m.
